Stanisław Oślizło

Legendary Captain of Górnik Zabrze

Stanisław Oślizło is one of the most outstanding figures in the history of Polish football. For 12 years, he was the captain of Górnik Zabrze, with whom he won eight Polish championships, six Polish Cups, and reached the final of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. He was also a 57-time capped Polish international, with whom he appeared at the 1970 FIFA World Cup.


Oślizło was born on November 13, 1937, in Jedłownik. He began his football career at Kolejarz Wodzisław, and in 1960 he moved to Górnik Zabrze. In his new club, he quickly became a regular player, and soon also the team captain.

Golden Years

Under the leadership of coach Jerzy Gorgonia, Górnik Zabrze experienced its golden years. In the years 1961-1972, the club won eight Polish championships, six Polish Cups, and reached the final of the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970. In this final, Górnik lost to Manchester City, but Oślizło scored the only goal for the Polish team in this match.

In addition to his club successes, Oślizło also achieved success with the Polish national team. In the years 1961-1971, he appeared in 57 matches, in which he scored one goal. He was a member of the national team that qualified for the 1970 FIFA World Cup. At the World Cup in Mexico, Oślizło appeared in all three matches of Poland, in which his team finished third.

A mixed set of skills

Oślizło was a footballer with outstanding technical and tactical skills. He was also very intelligent and intuitive, thanks to which he was able to effectively block the attacks of his opponents. He was also a very brave player who never gave up.

Oślizło retired from football in 1972. After the end of his sports career, he worked as a coach and sports activist. He was the president of Górnik Zabrze in the years 1982-1983.
